Issues of Identity - Adi Nes and his Staged Photographs

The photographer, Adi Nes (b. 1966) is a graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem. Recently, Nes has enjoyed a great deal of success locally and internationally. His oversized photographs are the result of complex staging and deal with issues of identity: masculinity, homoeroticism and other issues connected with Israeli identity.

His staged photographs contain many references to Art History and the history of photography. Nes’ style is unique and reminiscent of film productions.

Nes usually develops a series of photographs around a common theme. In the past he created a series on Soldiers (in which his photograph, The Last Supper, was recently sold at Sotheby’s Auction House for $264,000). Later, he created a series on Young Men inspired by Greek mythology. In the series, Prisoners, the subjects were dressed in clothes from the best international fashion designers, and was first published in the fashion magazine Vogue Hommes International. Nes’ most recent series, Biblical Stories, presents Biblical heroes as street people.

Nes’ presentation will be accompanied by slides and a short making off film. During the meeting Nes will chronicle his rise in the world of art, sources of inspiration connected to Greek mythology, Christianity and Bible stories, life in Israel and about his unique style of working.

Adi Nes has received world acclaim through solo shows at the Legion of Honor (San Francisco), the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago. His last exhibition Biblical Stories is currently on display in Paris, France as well as at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio after having already been on display at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and at the Jack Sheinman Gallery in New York.
